thanks everyone! :) not completely manual; most people I know whose pics I admire shoot in aperture priority mode so that's what I'm mostly using, and what I used for this pic. then did a little adjusting (like adding soft focus) in Picasa.

PS I shoot aperture priority a lot but always check my histogram...sometimes my camera meters dark so I over expose by a half a stop a lot. I would not tell someone to shoot manual unless they had a light meter or grey card. You gotta read the light with something. A light meter is a must for studio lighting.
