Happiness Is...

...when your husband comes home from Aldi with a surprise: three pounds of deliciously red strawberries, purchased for 99 cents a pound. And then, when you have strawberry shortcake for dinner. Not with dinner, for dinner--a giant piece (the Bisquick kind, which I recently discovered is even better if made with a little extra sugar), covered in sliced berries and their juice, in a bowl with milk.

Important Note: Contrary to the belief of Steve's coworkers, you cannot call sponge cake with strawberry-flavored goop and whipped cream "strawberry shortcake." Is that a Southern thing?? You've just gotten ALL THREE components wrong. Whipped cream or ice cream is acceptable in place of the milk, but honestly, the milk is so much better (and healthier--because we're having strawberry shortcake for dinner, obviously we're going for "healthy").

Mmm...oven buzzer just went off, I'm going to go enjoy my dinner now :)

Mmm, I love strawberries. My favorite way is in yogurt with granola or on Bryers Vanilla ice cream. Your strawberry shortcake sounds good, although I must confess, I've never heard of it with milk. Usually I've had it served with whipped cream (the real stuff).

Yay! my dad used to make us bisquick shortcake every spring break when I was a kid, it was my favorite, we'd cover it with strawberries and whipped cream instead of milk, it was so so good!

Milk is good...DQ soft-serve Vanilla is better.

We had that for dinner on Saturday. ;-p

That is exactly the way I like to eat them!! And in fact, I was just contemplating having strawberry shortcake for dinner tonight......not as dessert. So....thanks for being the deciding factor in that.

much love!

Yes! Bisquick w/ real strawberries and MILK!

That sponge-cake/glaze, Southern thing is like "sweet tea"---one more reason I'm thankful the Union flag is flying in Washington!

(I'm thankful that the Union flag is flying because otherwise the south would ruin all the good foods...that is.)

I have to confess, I've never heard of it with milk, and it really doesn't sound very appealing to me. I'm a "johnny come lately" with the Bisquick shortbread, I used to be a pound cake kind of girl. And I still love me some good pound cake with strawberries and whipped topping but I've come to like the less sweet and bisquit-y texture of the Bisquick shortbread. I like to make the Bisquick shortbread, and serve it with the strawberries, some vanilla bean ice cream and a bit of whipped cream on top.

And I would totally eat for dinner, too!

Hi,
I came across your blog from another blog...can't remember the exact trail anymore! Anyway, your posts are so fun. Just had to say I'm SO w/ you on the whole strawberry shortcake thing....best w/ Bisquick & milk and tons of strawberries. And you're right, sponge cake w/ goop is NOT strawberry shortcake!

Best wishes on your baby! I'll keep checking in. I love blogging!
